Setting Up Multi-Factor Authentication
Setting Up Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA)
MFA makes your UCOL Microsoft account significantly more secure
Where to set up MFA
You can setup your MFA methods by visiting https://aka.ms/mfasetup
The default (and preferred) authentication method is using the Microsoft Authenticator App on your mobile
phone. (You can get the app from the Google Play store or Apple App store)
Note: the text message option will be discontinued by Microsoft in the future, but can be used for now.
After the initial setup, you can add and/or delete authentication methods by visiting
https://aka.ms/setupsecurityinfo. You can also change the default authentication method here as well.
The different types of MFA
Authenticator App
- The Microsoft Authenticator app is recommended, but you can use others such as Google
- It's a good idea to set this up, even if you don't regularly use it, as a backup method
- If you have a UCOL managed phone, the Microsoft app should already be installed, otherwise browse the App Store for Microsoft Authenticator
- Enter a 2-digit number and Approve or Deny sign-ins in the app
- Sign-in on your device using a One-Time Password (OTP) from the app
Phone (note, the text message option will be discontinued by Microsoft in future)
- Confirm your identity by using a mobile phone number
- Sign-in using a OTP sent to you by text message
- Sign-in by answering a call and following some instructions such as pushing the # key
Office or Alternate Phone
- Confirm your identity by using a landline/DDI number
- Sign-in by answering a call and following instructions such as pushing the # key
Email
- Confirm your identity for a Self-Service Password Reset or Account Unlock
- Sign-in using a OTP sent to an alternative email address, such as a personal email address (i.e. gmail.com or outlook.com etc.)
